Welcome to the Pharmacy Technician Training Course!!
This week contains course material for our first week. Our goals for the first week are very modest: we fill out paperwork, get acquainted with one another, the course, and the CPhT process. We will discuss brand and generic drugs, and learn how they are the same and how they are different. In calculations, we practice using our calculators and learn that units are the words that go along with and give meaning to numbers; when the same units are present in the top and bottom of a calculation, we can cancel them out. In future sessions, units will be used to guide us into correctly setting up pharmacy calculations.

During our first session, we go over some things to memorize and some topics related to brand and generic drugs. Brand and generic drugs contain the SAME ACTIVE INGREDIENT in the SAME AMOUNT. They can be different in how rapidly or how much of the active ingredient enters the body. This is called pharmacokinetics. If the pharmacokinetics of a brand and generic is similar enough, they are said to be BIOEQUIVALENT, and will have an AB rating in the FDA Orange Book. Much of our session is spent going over calculation problems to achieve two goals: being able to cancel out units whenever they appear in both the top and the bottom of a problem, and being able to work with our calculators to get the correct number. Remember, a correct answer has both number and units. Also, as we shall see next week, we can use the units to guide us in setting up correct solutions to pharmacy calculation problems.

Calculators and Units
This is the handout and presentation on Calculations and Units. The handout is in PDF format. The presentation contains slides and audio, so make sure your sound is on. Note that there is a blue control bar that allows you to pause and resume the presentation or to move forwards and backwards slide by slide. This session will review calculators and units. We emphasize recognizing units and canceling them when they appear in the top and bottom of an equation. The units remaining are the units of the answer.

Brand and Generic Drugs
This session will review some important aspects of Brand and Generic Drugs. The handout contains copies of the slides in PDF format and can be viewed and printed using Adobe Acrobat. The presentation contains slides and audio, so make sure your sound is on. Note that there is a blue control bar that allows you to pause and resume the presentation or to move forwards and backwards slide by slide. Brand and generic drugs contain the same active ingredients in the same amounts. They can differ in price, as well as in inactive ingredients, like color. It's important for pharmacy technicians to understand the relationship between brand and generic drugs so that they can help patients make good decisions and feel comfortable with their medicines. -
Brand and Generic Drugs
This assessment will help you review material covered in the first session on Brand and Generic Drugs. The test also provides an explanation of each correct answer.
